Background & History

Priontext
2001

Priontex was founded

Priontex was founded in 2001 as a joint venture with award winning technology partner BreatheTex Corporation (Pty) Ltd, to develop and provide the medical market in South Africa with high quality laminated and non-laminated coated fabrics which conform to the highest international (FDA and EN) standards and benchmark with the best in the world.
2004

Medical textile rental

In 2004 the company extended its offering to provide a medical textile rental service for the surgical theatre environment in Cape Town.
Micronclean
2006

Partnership with Micronclean

The expansion was supported in 2006 through a joint venture with international partner, Micronclean Worldwide, which has over twenty years experience in providing specialised textile processing services. MWW offers a range of garments and fabrics to the pharmaceutical, biotechnological, electronic and food industries on five continents, as well as a complete controlled process of decontamination of such garments.
2007

Priontex in Midrand, Johannesburg

The success of Priontex and its partners was supported by expanding the offering into Johannesburg. In 2007 a new state-of-the-art production facility was built by Priontex in Midrand to support the increasing healthcare and decontamination business.
2012

Priontex acquired Malachite Medical

To compliment its reusable drape and gown offering, Priontex acquired Malachite Medical in 2012. Under its Prionguard brand, Malachite’s comprehensive portfolio of single use surgical drapes, gowns and medical trays is well established in the South African market.
2017

Priontex acquired B & L Steripack

In August 2017 Priontex acquired B & L Steripack a Durban based healthcare company supplying a reusable garment and surgical gown portfolio and rental service. This move supports the Priontex vision to offer its reusable full outsource theatre linen rental service to a wider South African base of healthcare institutions.

Environment

Environmental pollution has become a major concern for the future of life on our planet. Incineration of medical waste from hospitals contributes significantly to airborne pollution in our environment – an inconvenient truth!

Medical waste incineration is a major source for chlorinated dioxins, extremely toxic substances that may pose a large-scale, long-term public health risk by affecting reproduction, development, immune system function and carcinogenesis.

Source reduction entails the replacement of single-use items with reusable items where possible.
