Description
Standards – The ISO 16604 and ASTM 1671 test methods are designed to measure the penetration resistance or breakthrough of a medium containing a bacteriophage.
The bacteriophage used is referred to as Phi X174 and has a virus particle size of 0.027 mm. This is considerably smaller than the Corona virus with a typical diameter of 0.120 mm.
These tests assess the resistance to penetration based on the size of the virus particle. An effective barrier has to block a virus particle sizes > 0.027 mm. Accordingly, ISO 16604 and ASTM 1671 can provide a method by which to assess and qualify the resistance to penetration of a Corona virus particle that is significantly larger in size.
